Dagelijks leven in Ijsland/My daily life in Iceland

If ever you thought life was different here, you were wrong. Really?? Well, you decide. Most of the comments to the pictures are written in English, some of them in Flemish, and a few words here and there in Icelandic. Just to throw you off.

Hola, buenos dias, me llamo Jon y soy estudiante de Espanol - Adios wooden floor
So how was our week? Including our first Spanish class where we had a lot of fun, we had a pretty good week. The final wooden bits were removed from the cement, cleaned etc and Nonni cleaned up a lot outside around the house so on Friday, we were ready for the stage which was kinda what shall we say, emotionally painful. As you can probably tell from this picture, Nonni is not a happy man. The wooden floor had to go, and he found that very hard. For me, it was the ceiling that gave me some sore contractions, but this is part of deal, so we got on with it, from the clean cuts on the wooden floor to the dirty tearing down of the isolation underneath the roof, with the new temporary walls being put up in between. On Sunday evening our mission was accomplished and we are ready for the roof to be torn down, and Bjössi the bore to come and do his job.

The kids had a good time too this week, with Elin being excited about Berglind's birthday, sleep over parties etc. and her own birthday coming up this week, and Jonatan loosing his first tooth and making new friends at school so finally he has other options if Elin is not available.

Andrea has started Icelandic classes and life is just about falling into a nice rhythm again! Posted by Picasa

This is now our living room, where the dining table used to be. As you can see, the temporary wall has been put up, and the table is gone, so we now have really cosy meals at our kitchen table, all six of us together! Posted by Picasa

Our seating arrangements now...with no possibility to play the piano Posted by Picasa

And this is how it looks after the weekend, no wooden floor, no ceiling, no isolation.... Posted by Picasa

And Jonatan lost his first tooth - the tooth fairy came and for the next tooth he is going to loose, he has big plans: he is going to brush it really really really well before he is going to put it underneath his pillow, because he thinks he might get more money then.  Posted by Picasa

Fall: a good time to visit Thingvellir, as Tomas and Andrea did yesterday and took this nice picture.

This weekend, on Saturday morning at 0:06 Asthildur and Kiddi became proud parents of a gorgeous little princess, as a baby girl is always called in Iceland before she gets a name. We did not have to wait very long though and on Sunday at a family gathering we were put out of our misery: Helga Maria, and the vote of the Icelandic jury was unanimous: douze points (for those who do not watch the Eurovision song contest: 12 points)

The construction work is going fine. I have to say though that at this point it is quite coarse: we are working with big material, big hammers, etc. The children liked scraping the cement off the wood and removing the nails. It is a big step to see the panels being removed and the actual walls and where the windows will come and it gives us a very good idea of how things will look like one day.
Next week we hope the steel beam will get here, and we will have time to clean up a bit around the building site inside and outside. We hope that within the next two weeks, the roof will be removed and another one been put on top. EEhhh....at least, that's how it is scheduled on Jon's schedule. But a picture says a thousand words so I have put quite a few of what we have been up to the last couple weeks. As usual, it starts with the newest one right after this one. I am always trying to remember to do it the other way around, but I always forget once I get started.Posted by Picasa

Another view of the side house today on Sunday the 18th. Actually, the inside would have been interesting too, as it looks like a swimming pool ;) . It has been raining quite a lot the last couple days, and with no way out and no roof, the water is rising.  Posted by Picasa

So this is how the side of the new addition looks now: you can see where the steel beam is supposed to come which is the next step. Posted by Picasa

Explanation : previous or next picture (depending in what direction you are watching this). This picture actually gives an excellent idea of the state of our garden.  Posted by Picasa

This picture is taken on Friday the 16th, another perfect day in Iceland (not!) and we are removing the wood panels from the cement, removing all the nails, and scraping the hardened cement remains off the wood so we can re-use it to build the roof. Fun fun fun fun islenskt fun  Posted by Picasa

Pouring the cement. Posted by Picasa

Last Wednesday, two concrete mixers, one with the cement itself, and the other one with the crane thingy, obstructed our street for a good hour or so. But at least they did not have to manoeuvre into our garden. As you can see, it was a beautiful day.  Posted by Picasa

This is how far we are today! inside, the place where the chimney enters the house can be seen. Posted by Picasa

Side of the house, two windows and the inside of the chimney. They have finished the inside of the walls, as well as the steel maze, and have made the frame for where the windows are going to go, and the chimney has been located, and now they still have to do the outside walls before they can pour the cement in between...and start on the roof... but they already made a hole in the side of the roof, not yet through and through though...but still, things are moving nicely along - so far so good.
